How I Chose the Name Seagull Writing

In choosing a name for my company, I wanted something that would not only be easy to remember but also make me want to begin each day at the computer.

In short, the name had to be fun.

I solicited opinions from my family who thought my given name was the respectable, appropriate and businesslike route to go. I could tell they thought Seagull Writing was, at best, corny and dorky and who knows what else.

But I stayed the course because I had to be the one who was happy, for critical reasons like motivation and success.

I thought and I rationalized and I listened to my heart.

I thought about how the ocean has always called me and how seagulls, in particular, have always held a special place in my heart.

Seagulls bring back memories of summers on Martha’s Vineyard as a teenager. Of college days in New London, Connecticut where I soaked in views of beautiful Long Island Sound on the way to class. And of newlywed days when neighborhood children named me “The Mommy Seagull,” which was a heartwarming ‘welcome’ and introduction to my new married name of Siegel.

Even today, I look out my window in Atlanta, Georgia, five hours from the Atlantic, and I don’t see seagulls. But I see beauty - doves and oak trees and hydrangeas and butterflies. Most of all, I see possibility. How do I know I won’t be running on a beach, seagulls flying overhead, many times in the years ahead?

And so, with seagulls serving the prime function of delighting me and feeding my soul the way writing does, ‘Seagull Writing’ became the perfect name.

There are many businesses with ‘Seagull’ in the name. But I know of only one Seagull Writing, whose hand-tailored copy satisfies clients, attracts readers and ultimately succeeds with as much passion and dedication as the name of this little company was conceived.

I hope you will call upon me and take the journey with me.

After all, life should be fun.
